Dr. Jons;
Today, I want to talk a minute about animal abuse. As you may know, last year, the Michael Vick dog fighting case made headline news. As a result, many states took a closer look at their laws regarding animal abuse. Several states now make animal cruelty a felony that carries strong penalties.
Veterinarians and pet owners both often have to look at their roles when an animal abuse case is suspected. Veterinarians are strongly encouraged to report all cases but now in 11 states - it is mandatory. The states are - Arizona, California, Colorado, Illinois, Kansas, Maryland, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Oregon, West Virginia and Wisconsin.
Even in states where it is not mandatory, many veterinarians will report suspected abuse as an advocate for the animal. After all pets can't talk and they look to us to stand up for them. Also, Pet abuse or violence is also linked to other abuse or violence. In fact, one of our authors wrote this article that you might find interesting - Silent Victims of Family Abuse: The Role of Pets in Violence.
What can you do if you suspect animal abuse? We have an article that tells you just that. Take a minute and read it as it may help you in the case you are ever faced with this situation. Go to What to Do if You Suspect Animal Abuse.
Until next time,
Dr. Jon
